Art x Science: Placenta Project

What a cool project I’m truly thrilled to have been a part of. This assignment was one of my first tasks as Associate Director of UCLA’s Center for Reproductive Science, Health and Education. From a creative design perspective, I sought to balance finding a piece that was representative of the work of the Center, was thought-provoking, and was capable of filling such a large space.

In 2023, I formed a committee of UCLA students, staff, and faculty. We deliberated on a fantastic set of submissions from a broad range of talented artists whose crafts spanned across photography to acrylics and everything in between. From these committee discussions, artist Saskia Baden, MFA (2023), was chosen as the winner. The Center’s first curated piece, Abyssal, is an installation of a large-scale photograph of a human placenta captured at the time of birth. This stunning piece, measuring 16ft x 12ft, was installed/[~put up] this year (2024) by the Wilson Cetina Group on the 4th floor of the Biomedical Research Sciences Building. Abyssal, part of Baden’s larger work titled Mother Skin, examines and compares "the fluidity of water and the womb with an emphasis on the unknown".

We have been excited by the outpouring of responses, love, and discussion that this piece has elicited and are looking forward to building more projects at the intersection of art and science in the future.

Warm regards,

Stephanie
